The Art of Picking

Po Yun Wang’s works are instantly recognizable by their plump size and nose picking. With the Picky Eaters series, we’ve traversed the world of fast-food joints and now we’re taking it up a notch in the bougie department with our new series The Art of Picking.

Keeping the iconic plump shape and nose-picking gesture that is synonymous with Po Yun Wang’s works, the new series parodies the world’s most famous artworks in his beloved style. The first of the series? It’s none other than…

The Art of Picking: Mona Lisa

Of course, it had to be the Mona Lisa! After all, it is “the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world". Made from vinyl and packaged in a beautiful window box, she picks her nose for all to see with great grace and poise.

Paired with an additional 3 interchangeable hands, swap out Mona Lisa’s left hand to accentuate her unbothered vibe as she picks her nose. She’ll be on her phone, she’ll have a smoke, and she’ll fling her booger at you if you catch her flashing the ok symbol.

We interviewed Po Yun Wang back when we dropped our first piece together, Picky Eaters: The Clown. Leonardo da Vinci has been a source of inspiration on his creative journey, even calling da Vinci his “idol”. During a recent conversation on The Art of Picking: Mona Lisa, we talked about da Vinci and he said “at that time, he was the only one who could draw so many things that no one could imagine”.

THE ART OF PICKING: MONA LISA BY PO YUN WANG

Po Yun Wang tells us that he always wanted to do a nose-picking Mona Lisa because back when the painting was made she would’ve had to sit still in a chair, probably bored beyond despair for hours, likening it to “the feeling of world-weariness and indifference”.

“I think it is very fun and interesting,” he says about parodying a world-famous artwork like the Mona Lisa in such a manner for everyone to enjoy, expressing her weariness through something as innocuous as nose-picking.
