We were kids. It’s the weekend. No school. Turn on the TV to catch SpongeBob and friends on new adventures in Bikini Bottom. Life’s good.

SpongeBob and friends have followed us through to adulthood—still a part of our lives despite not having watched an episode in years. Why’s that? The memes, surely! SpongeBob memes have been pioneers in the growing meme culture over the last decade, continuing to give us a good laugh. We’ve dug into the origin stories of some iconic SpongeBob memes, hoping they’ll bring you the same joy they’ve brought us.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Imagination (2005)

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Yes, it is the grandfather of meme formats: Imagination! Spreading since the nascent days of Internet memes, this image is often used as a sarcastic reaction, with a mocking emphasis on the words “Imagination”.

Patrick Star: Surprised Patrick (2010)

The ultra-lovable but airheaded Patrick has some of the best expressions throughout the show! Originating from 2004 The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, this meme is often used as an ending to a shocking clip, both in serious and ironic contexts. The image is also occasionally superimposed on the image or GIF itself.

Squidward: Sleeping Squidward (2010)

Squidward just can’t catch a break! This meme is frequently used to convey that particular feeling you get when you’re about to sleep and suddenly remember you forgot to do something important—all too relatable.

Gary the Snail: Gary Come Home (2004)

We’re going to cheat a little here—this is not a meme but an extremely touching moment! This song came from the episode which saw SpongeBob desperately searching for Gary after the snail ran away from home. It shed light on the special relationship the two had, running way deeper than simply pet and owner.

Mr. Krabs: Blurry Mr. Krabs (2016)

It’s everyone’s favorite capitalist taking the stage! This meme is used to express confusion or disorientation in everyday situations, functioning in a very similar way to mfw (my face when) memes. It is often accompanied by a tweet-length description of the scenario.

Mrs. Puff: Oh Neptune (2015)

As the driving teacher-in-charge of teaching Bikini Bottom’s worst boat driver—none other than SpongeBob—this meme references Mrs. Puff’s most iconic line in the show. It sums up how the boating instructor feels in most of her appearances on the show: pure dread.

Plankton and Karen: The Ultra Rare Power Couple

Married co-owners of the failed Chum Bucket, Plankton and Karen are the main antagonists on the show. Like any couple, the two have had their fair share of ups and downs in their relationship.

One of the sweetest moments the two shared was in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water where Karen had to use all of her processing power to fuel her time machine. In their last moments together, Plankton admits that he has taken her for granted and apologizes.
